Shenzhen Longhua District Central Hospital The Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery is designated as a Key Medical Discipline of Longhua District, Shenzhen and a collaborative training base for National Standardized Residency Training. Boasting a well-structured talent team, outstanding professional competence and rich clinical experience, the department currently has 11 physicians and 14 nurses. The staffing includes 2 Chief Physicians, 2 Associate Chief Physicians, 1 Associate Chief Nurse, 3 Attending Physicians, 3 Resident Physicians and 1 audiology technician, among whom there is 1 doctoral degree holder and 6 master’s degree holders.

The department is equipped with world-class advanced medical devices, including Danish vestibular function examination system, pure tone audiometry, acoustic impedance detector and auditory brainstem response instrument; German STORZ and American Medtronic ultra-high-definition endoscopes, surgical power system, navigation system, operating microscope system, CO₂ laser system and polysomnography system, which fully meet the clinical diagnosis and treatment needs.

I. Discipline Subspecialty Settings

1. Rhinology

It covers minimally invasive rhinologic and sinus surgery, rhinological-ophthalmic related surgery, and rhinological skull base surgery.

The department has mature expertise in rhinologic and sinus surgery as well as rhinological-ophthalmic related surgery. It has successfully performed endoscopic minimally invasive procedures for pansinusitis, nasal polyps, endoscopic transnasal dacryocystorhinostomy, resection of benign nasal tumors, optic nerve decompression and orbital decompression.

The development of rhinological skull base surgery is advancing rapidly. A number of sophisticated high-level operations have been completed, including navigation-assisted resection of rhinological skull base tumors, endoscopic resection of benign and malignant nasal tumors, and excision of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

2. Otology

It consists of otologic microsurgery, otologic endoscopic surgery and medical otology.

Traditional microscopic middle ear surgery has been expanded to endoscopic middle ear microsurgery and combined endoscopic-microscopic middle ear surgery, including modified radical mastoidectomy, tympanotomy, tympanoplasty and hearing reconstruction. Such minimally invasive approaches maximize lesion removal, reduce recurrence rate and improve cure rate.

The department also has solid achievements in otologic medical procedures such as stapedotomy and stapes prosthesis implantation. Meanwhile, a Vertigo Center has been established. Comprehensive examinations including vestibular function test, otoacoustic emission, auditory brainstem response and pure tone audiometry are routinely carried out to further improve the diagnosis and treatment capacity of otological diseases.

3. Laryngology and Voice Medicine

Focusing on laryngeal vocal microsurgery and sleep-disordered breathing.

The department has mature technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of snoring diseases, tonsillar and adenoid lesions, vocal fold polyps, vocal fold nodules and laryngeal papilloma. In the future, by taking full advantages of CO₂ laser and radiofrequency plasma thermal instruments, the department will target the treatment of precancerous lesions such as vocal fold leukoplakia and severe atypical hyperplasia, as well as early laryngeal carcinoma, so as to further enhance surgical efficacy.
